SUMMER 2024
Back in the spring 2024 edition of the Graniteer magazine, Mona Agnew, the Editor of the magazine wrote a piece entitled, Why Do Conventions Still Matter. As I am currently sitting in my booth at one of the many conventions the EGA attends each year, I re-read Mona’s words and began to reflect on them.
I started attending granite conventions in June of 2014, when I was hired at EGA, and I have been attending them ever since. In a typical year, EGA will attend approximately 10 granite related conventions throughout the country. Mona’s article does a good job at explaining all the benefits of attending conventions and why it is important, but I wanted to elaborate on one part of her article, and that is the relationships.
At each convention I attend, I watch the relationships that have been built over many years of doing business and attending conventions together. Whether it is retailers that are competitors in the same area, or suppliers or vendors that are selling the same products, it’s like family coming together again. They share ideas and best practices, they offer to help each other if needed, and they genuinely mean it. These types of relationships can’t be developed over the internet, they have to be developed over years of face-to-face interactions.
In addition to maintaining existing relationships, many folks bring their families to the conventions, and are thus introducing new generations to the monument business. I can remember when I started coming to the conventions 10 years ago, I saw families with young kids attending the conventions, and now, 10 years later, those same kids are working in the family business. This is the same story that has been going on for generations in the granite industry, and why there are such solid relationships. It is because of the conventions they have been attending all their lives, and the friendships that have been made.
In a world where we are becoming more disconnected from physical relationships, because of the virtual world we live in, we need to get back to interacting with people one-on-one. While at the current convention, I was talking with one of my EGA members. He told me that he enjoyed coming to the conventions not just to see his existing customers, but also to see people and hear what they had to say. He didn’t care if they bought granite from him or not, he just enjoyed the people. Conventions are a great place for that to happen. Plus, they are a vital part of our industry’s culture. Conventions provide a time and place for all that generational knowledge and experience to come together and to be shared. In addition, it is where new knowledge and ideas are introduced in an effort to keep our industry moving forward toward the future.
Each year the Elberton Granite Association follows the grand tradition of hosting an annual meeting for members to come together and discuss the business of the past year. This meeting provides a valuable opportunity for members to reflect on the highs and lows, the achievements and the shortcomings, along with the opportunity to begin discussing any changes that might be needed for the future. The meeting is followed by a catered buffet. The combination of a business meeting followed by a time of eating and fellowship amongst the members enhances camaraderie and strengthens friendships and business relationships alike. This tradition not only promotes unity but also fosters a sense of community and family amongst the members.
It is a meaningful, time-honored tradition that the outgoing president of the Elberton Granite Association be honored with a gavel-mounted plaque to commemorate his year of service and dedication to the Association and the granite industry. This plaque not only honors their efforts but also serves as a symbol of leadership and responsibility within the community. Traditions like these often help maintain a sense of continuity and respect within organizations. This year’s plaque was presented to Outgoing President, Michael Baston, owner of BASTON MONUMENTS by EGA’s EVP, Chris Kubas. Michael’s leadership was impeccable throughout 2023. Leading an association through difficult times requires skill, dedication, and a deep understanding of the industry and its members’ needs. The Association wants to acknowledge Michael’s contributions and highlight the importance of strong leadership in navigating obstacles and fostering growth and unity within the association. This plaque is a testament to commitment and capability in steering the organization and the industry. The Association board members will elect a new president at the July board meeting signifying a transition in leadership and the beginning of a new chapter. It is an important milestone for the association, it’s a moment where board members come together to decide who will guide the association and represent its interests in the coming year. This process ensures that leadership remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of the members and the granite industry.
Throughout the business portion, the meeting is called to order by Outgoing President, Michael Baston. Roll call of membership is taken to ensure there are enough voting members present to constitute a quorum. Shortly after, voting of nominees for the three new trustees to serve for the following three-year term are taken. Billy Bryant with GOLD EAGLE QUARRIES, Brad Burton with BURTON MONUMENTS, and Marty Walker with WALKER GRANITE COMPANY were elected to be the next three members to serve a three-year term on the board of trustees. Three esteemed board members that have completed their three-year term step down each year. They are Outgoing President, Michael Baston with BASTON MONUMENTS, Bob Paul with BEAVERDAM QUARRY, and Outgoing Treasurer, Rose Walker with WALKER GRANITE WALKER. We want to recognize these board members for not only their service, but their hard work, dedication and sacrifice. Their leadership was instrumental in guiding the Association and its members through not only general business but milestones and challenges over the past three years. It is the unwavering commitment, efforts and valuable insights of each and every board member that contribute to the growth and stability of our industry.

DESIGN MART unleashes creativity with their new online color kit capability. In the dynamic world of design, tools that streamline workflows and enhance creativity are invaluable. Design Mart, a leading provider of design solutions, has recently unveiled an exciting upgrade to their Color Kit that promises to revolutionize how designers bring their monument designs to a realistic color setting. Previously reliant on Inkscape, Design Mart’s Color Kit now seamlessly integrates with GIMP, the renowned open-source image editor. This enhancement simplifies the process for designers using programs like Gerber that lack advanced color and texture capabilities. By bridging this gap, Design Mart empowers designers to import their intricate designs into GIMP effortlessly.
Design Mart’s commitment to innovation shines through with the enhanced Color Kit. By listening to the needs of designers and adapting to industry trends, they’ve created a tool that not only enhances productivity but also sparks creativity. The seamless integration with GIMP marks a significant step forward in making sophisticated design techniques accessible to all. The standout feature of the enhanced Color Kit lies in its ability to infuse designs with vibrant colors and realistic granite fills directly within GIMP. This functionality opens new creative possibilities, allowing designers to experiment with hues, shades, and textures to achieve the perfect aesthetic. Scan this QR code to go to an informative video showing the ease use in this new color kit capability.
Once a year, EGA offers a 5-day class that walks you through everything it takes to create a monument. The 5-day course offers a trip to an active quarry where the attendees can witness the granite being quarried from the Earth. A tour to a production facility will give the class first-hand knowledge of how the block is cut to a more manageable size and sent to finishing to be polished, pitched or carved. The class will see updated setting techniques, monument design tips, laser and hand etching along with a tour to a local cemetery where symbolism and monument design will be discussed. Keynote Speaker, Troy Caldwell, CM, AICA of Caldwell Monuments in Kokomo, Indiana will be available all week as not only the speaker, but mentor. Cost of class is $400 and includes lunches throughout the week along with transportation to and from two hotel options in Elberton for all days except Friday.
Dixie Granite Installs New Contour Saw
DIXIE GRANITE has made a significant upgrade with the installation of a Grani Roc Contour Saw equipped with a 5-axis CNC control system. In the world of stone fabrication, precision, efficiency, and versatility are paramount. Dixie takes this seriously to ensure they stay on top of technology for their customers.
The movements of the machine are controlled by a 5 axes CNC. The data can be input directly in the CNC or by an ISO code file generated by the CAD-CAM software. This software allows Dixie to design the pieces to be profiled, transfer the files to the CNC, and define the parameters of cutting in each step of the cut (speed of cutting, speed of the wire, etc.). The machine has an electric system for bringing closer the small guide wheels that allows the operator to adjust the cutting width until the one desired, reducing the arch value when cutting with diamond wire and thereby increasing its speed allowing faster production. The motorized 360º turntable trolley is controlled by the CNC and has a “Backlash” system that permit the production of complex shapes such as balls, screws and rounds easily and quickly. The introduction of the Grani Roc Contour Saw marks a pivotal moment for Dixie Granite. By investing in cutting-edge technology that combines precision CNC control with versatile cutting capabilities, they have reinforced their commitment to delivering superior quality and innovative solutions to their clients. As the demand for custom stone designs continues to grow, Dixie Granite is well-positioned to lead the industry forward with their state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities. The JOHNSON MACHINE SHOP'S heavy-duty core hole drilling machine is a robust solution tailored for demanding granite and stone production environments. The machine is constructed from heavy structural steel, ensuring durability and stability during high-volume operations. The welded frame enhances stability and rigidity, crucial for precision drilling in tough materials like granite. Complete water and hydraulic systems are integrated into the core drill machine, simplifying setup and operation. Operators only need to connect the machine to water and electricity, minimizing downtime and enhancing efficiency.
The core drilling operations can be controlled according to the operator's preferences, offering flexibility and customization. All electrical and hydraulic controls are conveniently located for ease of use, enhancing the operator's efficiency and safety.
Equipped with a powerful 10-horsepower spindle motor capable of reaching speeds from 120 RPMs to up to 1100 RPMs, the machine ensures efficient and precise drilling through granite and stone materials. The spindle arm can be raised and lowered to accommodate varying stone heights, while the automatic down-feed feature simplifies the drilling process, improving accuracy and productivity. A stone cart can be utilized to position the stone under the spindle, facilitating precise alignment before fine-tuning the cut location. This feature enhances workflow efficiency and accuracy, minimizing material wastage.
Overall, the Johnson Machine Shop's heavy-duty core hole drilling machine is a comprehensive solution designed to meet the demanding needs of high-volume granite and stone production. Its robust construction, integrated systems, operator-friendly controls, and adjustable features make it a valuable asset for businesses in the stone industry.

Reliance Granite Company has a rich history. It began its journey over three decades ago when James Noggle set out to create a business rooted in integrity and quality. From its humble beginnings, the company quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest granite products in the region.
In 1993, Reliance Granite became an active voting member of the Elberton Granite Association, solidifying its commitment to the industry and its peers. This membership not only highlights their expertise but also their dedication to upholding the highest standards of craftsmanship and ethical business practices. Through its membership in The Association, Reliance Granite contributes to the collective efforts aimed at promoting the growth and sustainability of the granite industry in Elberton and beyond. This longstanding affiliation underscores Reliance Granite’s deep roots in the local granite sector and its role as a respected member of the community.
What truly sets Reliance Granite apart is its deep-seated commitment to family values. Today, the company is proudly operated by James Noggle’s son, Greg Noggle, and his daughter-in-law, Dawn Noggle. Under their leadership, Reliance Granite has continued to thrive, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. The company is now on its fourth generation of Noggles. Mr. Noggle, James’ father, was an industry craftsman who passed his passion along to his son. James began working in monument manufacturing in 1960 with a hiatus to serve in the U.S. Army. He founded his first company, Noggle Granite Sales in the early 1970’s. The business grew steadily and in 1985 James founded Reliance Granite Company. Like his father and his grandfather, Greg Noggle has worked in the granite industry most of his life. He joined the family business following graduation from Elbert County Comprehensive High School. Dawn joined the company when she and Greg married. The couple have two children, Blake and Zac. In 2014, Greg became disabled and no longer works in the daily operations of the company, Blake, stepped in the role of his father, as plant manager, and strives daily to continue the tradition set forth by his father and grandfather.
The Noggle family extends their values beyond blood ties, treating every employee as an integral part of the Reliance family. This inclusive approach fosters a supportive work environment where dedication and hard work are celebrated, ensuring both employee satisfaction and exceptional customer service. This method helps in today’s culture where it is difficult to retain employees. Many employees have stayed with the company for years. Jennifer Vickery has been with the company thirty-one years and now manages the office and customer service. “When we get good help, we keep it” stated Greg many years ago. The statement still rings true.
Located on Stinchcomb Road, just six miles west of Elberton, Reliance Granite’s office and production facility serve as the heart of their operations. The company’s presence in the community goes beyond business; they actively participate in local events and initiatives, contributing to the economic and social fabric of Elberton.
The company markets “Reliance Blue” as their exclusive selection of granite along with many other colors such as Morning Rose, India Black, and Dakota Mahogany. Whether it’s a custom memorial or a monumental piece for a public space, Reliance Granite Company continues to be a trusted choice for discerning customers who value quality and service. Elberton Granite Association welcomes another new member to the family. McCannon Granite Company is not a new name to the granite industry, but it is undergoing improvements within the company. The firm, along with Crystal Blue Quarries, was purchased by Williams Stone Company and Edwin Williams of East Otis, Massachusetts. The new ownership took affect January of 2023.
The relationship between the two long time family-owned companies started in 1985 when Ed Williams experimented with having Elberton curbing slabs shipped via truck to Massachusetts from McCannon. Since then, the novel idea of using Georgia granite to meet the growing demand in Northeastern states for curbing has become common industry practice.
McCannon Granite runs a full-service industry. They quarry, cut, and polish. McCannon maintains every step of production in-house to better serve their customers and to ensure the highest level of quality along with the best price. The company offers building and landscaping materials such as granite edging, fencing, pedestals, pots, and vases along with monuments and memorials.
Having a wide range of granite colors available at McCannon provides customers with ample options to suit their preferences and project needs. This diversity allows clients to explore different aesthetics, from bold and vibrant hues to more subtle and neutral tones. However, the company is branded by the Crystal Blue color that is quarried straight from their own Crystal Blue Quarry. Having a unique quarry as the source of this particular granite color adds an extra layer of exclusivity and authenticity to their product.
The substantial investments being made in Elberton by Edwin Williams not only includes the acquisitions but expanding and growing Crystal Blue’s quarry operations and modernizing equipment to increase productivity.
Ron Mack, a long time Williams Stone employee and board member relocated to Elberton to oversee the operations and was recently named President at the end of 2023. Laura Chaffee from East Otis, MA serves as CFO.
According to Ron “Our unyielding dedication to provide customers with highly attentive service and timeless product quality at a fair price will mark our philosophy as we participate in the Elberton Granite Association and become part of the Elberton community. We look forward to providing the local market with blocks and slabs”

We’d like to see him go to a level in the business that we have not yet reached. He is very intelligent, and we believe he is capable.”
Darrell emphasizes his commitment to retaining the current staff, recognizing their value and aiming for a smooth transition within the company. His wife of twenty-one years, Becca, will play a role in the business once his move is complete. She will assist within the office offering support for sales and HR services.

Located on the Mason side of the Bridge of Honor in Mason County, West Virginia stands the Mason County Veterans’ Memorial. Each granite piece was meticulously crafted by skilled artisans at MATTHEWS GRANITE in Elberton, Georgia. As a leader in the Memorialization industry for more than a century and a half, Matthews Granite has carved out a legacy as a premier provider of custom granite memorials and monuments. Each memorial and monument produced by Matthews Granite is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans who understand the importance of precision and detail.
The memorial serves as a focal point for the community and beyond. Dedicated to not only those who have served in the Armed Forces from Mason County, but those that lost their lives doing so. This memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and commitment of local heroes. The centerpiece of the memorial is a bronze statue of Medal of Honor Recipient and Mason County native Staff Sgt. Jimmy Stewart. Stewart was killed in action while holding back enemy forces on May 18, 1966, during the Vietnam War. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1967 for giving his own life to protect his wounded squad members against an enemy platoon. The base is made of Jet Mist granite. The skin sunk engraving and laser etching contrast the polished surface brilliantly.
Surrounding the centerpiece memorial are thirteen bevels cut from Matthews Blue granite. Along the front are six bevels representing each branch of service. The bevels are all polished with a six-inch drop displaying a bronze medallion mounted on the bevel face. Five of the bevels along the back are each designated to hold names of Mason County residents that were killed in action. There is one bevel for each war that carried local causalities. There is one bevel commemorating POW and MIA residents from Mason County. The final bevel holds the names of each local Medal of Honor recipient throughout the years.

DIXIE GRANITE COMPANY, equipped with talented craftsmen and current technology, forged this monument made of Dixie Blue granite for Gates of Heaven located in Dothan, Alabama. The polished apex top of this monument along with the two bands that continue seamlessly on all four sides suggest a hint of timeless tradition and strong heritage. The family name is carved into a sunken, steel finished panel that is flanked by carved lines imitating traditional fluting of columns. This memorial is sitting atop a sub base that is designed with a graceful scotia and straight ends. The base is polished on top with a two-inch polished margin before transitioning to rock pitched edges. This monument crafted by Dixie embodies a blend of craftsmanship and tradition creating a lasting tribute that is both visually striking and meaningful.
MATTHEWS GRANITE showcased their craftsmanship with that mausoleum built for Cypress Lawn Memorial Park located in Colma, California. The combination of Matthews Blue and Morning Rose granite adds depth and visual interest to the mausoleum’s exterior. Different hues of granite can add to the overall richness of the architectural composition.
Corinthian fluted columns with a steel finish exude elegance and sophistication, while the bronze Gothic double doors add a touch of mystique and grandeur. These features add a striking combination of architectural elements, perfect for a solemn resting place.
The addition of a polished cross affixed to the keystone of the roof adds a poignant spiritual element to the mausoleum. It serves as a symbol of faith and hope, offering solace to those who visit the site. This detail not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the structure but also imbues it with a sense of reverence and sacredness, making it a fitting tribute to those laid to rest within.
Matching benches along the front creates a serene space for family members and loved ones to reflect and pay their respects. It adds a thoughtful touch to the mausoleum design, providing a place for quiet contemplation and shared memories. This mausoleum’s design and craftsmanship speak volumes about Matthews Granite’s dedication to honoring both the deceased and their grieving families.
In the serene grounds of a quiet cemetery, nestled among the stories of countless lives, stands a monument that embodies a lifetime of love, foresight, and craftsmanship. The monument was designed by Joe Fernandez of DESIGN MART for himself and his beloved wife Katherine, and carefully crafted by KEYSTONE MEMORIALS. This monument is not just a marker of their final resting place, but a testament to their enduring legacy along with Keystone’s unwavering dedication to quality.
“I first designed a version of the monument about 65 or 70 years ago,” Fernandez recalls with a hint of nostalgia. “It has always lingered in the recesses of my mind, and we agreed it was a fitting choice for our personal memorial.”
The memorial is crafted from Topaz Blue granite, a material renowned for its durability and timeless elegance. The monument is a testament to both form and function. Adorned with an intricate design featuring roses, acanthus leaves, and fluting, the memorial reflects Fernandez’s appreciation for artistry and beauty in every detail.
“The beautiful, atypical shape, with the oval top and half serpentines, complemented the central design perfectly,” Fernandez reflects. “I’ve always favored a more natural, steeled finish on gray granite, which adds a unique charm to the monument.”
Practical considerations were equally paramount in the design process. The wash-style base not only enhances the monument’s visual appeal but also ensures effective drainage, safeguarding the granite from water damage. This is a crucial feature for longevity in the cemetery’s environment. Beneath the main base lies another layer of granite, protecting the structure from ground moisture and ensuring its preservation over time.
Beyond its aesthetic and functional elements, the monument carries deeper significance. “Many memorials overlook the opportunity to convey family history,” Fernandez observes thoughtfully. “We incorporated some of our family’s story on the back of the stone, a gesture meant to guide future generations seeking to connect with their roots.”
As the sun sets over the cemetery, casting a gentle glow upon the granite, the monument crafted by Keystone Memorials stands as a timeless tribute, a beacon of remembrance and reflection for all who visit, ensuring that Joe Fernandez and Katherine’s story lives on, etched in stone for generations to come.
Design Mart and Keystone have had a longstanding relationship, and have worked on many projects together. The quality of their granite and craftsmanship is second to none, and it has been a pleasure working with the Oglesby family for three generations. - Joe Fernandez

GLASS ART IMAGING, a division of OM Stone, played a significant role in enhancing Oregon City’s veterans’ memorial area at Mountain View Cemetery. The renovation included the installation of six Elberton Gray granite podiums, each adorned with Glass Art emblems representing each branch of the military. These emblems are made of Jet Black granite and are twelve inches in circumference, featuring vibrant, long-lasting colors that are guaranteed to remain vibrant for centuries.
The podiums are arranged along a curved walkway that leads to a plaza, where granite benches provided by Glass Art and OM Stone offer a solemn place for visitors to reflect and honor veterans and their service to the country. This thoughtful design not only beautifies the memorial area but also provides a meaningful space for remembrance and gratitude.

Elberton, Georgia is famous for its granite, so it is fitting that a collaboration involving A.Q. STONE DESIGN COMPANY, DIXIE GRANITE COMPANY, KRIS HENDRIX ETCHINGS, Architectural Stone Products from Fredericksburg, VA, and Quinn Floyd’s longtime friend, Jim Boyd, would bring a touch of that local pride to such an important place as the White House Situation Room. Quinn with A.Q. Stone played a pivotal role in the design process, creating the design for the two distinct ledgers that now find the White House Situation Room their home. Shape carving granite with delicate sizes requires both skill and precision, making it a testament to the craftsmanship of Dixie Granite Company. Each intricately carved detail adds to the overall elegance and sophistication of the ledger sent to them. Kris Hendrix’s laser etching expertise would bring a modern touch to the project, complementing the traditional craftsmanship of Dixie Granite Company and the design work of A.Q. Stone. Laser etching allows for incredibly precise detailing and intricate designs, which can be especially effective when paired with the durability of granite. The combination of delicate shaping by Dixie Granite and precise laser etching by Kris Hendrix would create a visually stunning blend, adding a unique and personalized element to the White House Situation Room’s decor.

As we bid adieu to Willie David’s earthly form, let us not dwell on the void left in his wake, but rather celebrate the legacy of love and inspiration Willie David has bequeathed us. Salvatore Fratto, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at home, with his family by his side.
Salvatore “Sully” was born on June 2, 1934, in Taverna, Italy, and was a son of the late Carmine and Rosina (Sanzi) Fratto. Granite was his passion in life. He owned and operated, along with his brothers, The Fratto Brothers, Fratto Construction and Geneva Granite. He was a member of the Elberton Granite Association since 1985 until retirement. Geneva Granite still holds current membership. Sully’s dedication to his work was only surpassed by his unwavering devotion to his beloved wife and family. He took immense pride in his craft, creating beautiful granite structures that stand as a testament to his exceptional skill and relentless hard work. In his free time, he found joy in cultivating his garden, visiting the family business, and spending precious moments with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sully was entrusted with the daunting task of leaving behind everything and everyone he knew to expand the business in Georgia, with his loving wife by his side. Not only did he succeed, but he also forged lifelong friendships along the way. He cherished these memories and friendships like family, always holding them close to his heart and treasuring them deeply. His innovative methods and contributions to the industry continue to inspire and guide practices today.

Sully took me under his wing at just 19 years old. He was more than an uncle to me, he was a mentor. He always wanted what was best for his family. He showed his love for his family through his dedication to his craft. His generosity with donating monuments to victims of 9-11, Veterans, his old neighborhood and most recently to Dr Martin Luther King was how he showed it to the world. He was a tremendous influence as an uncle, a mentor and also as what a man is supposed to be. No one in this family would be where they are without his sacrifices. He was small in stature but left big shoes to fill. The pride he instilled in me l carry to work to this day. Rest in peace Uncle Sull Love you forever!
